GM is testing more than 50 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles with self-driving capabilities these days. You can see those vehicles in San Francisco, Detroit metro area, and Scottsdale, AZ. GM acquired Cruise, a startup in San Francisco, for over $1 billion last year. Cruise’s technology can give any vehicle self-driving capabilities.
Reuters is reporting that GM announced today that it would add more than 1100 jobs in California over the next five years at its Cruise Automation unit to boost its autonomous-driving efforts upon receiving $8 million in state tax credits.
Earlier this week, a much younger auto company was reported as having its market capitalization surpass that of GM’s. One could argue that Tesla is more than an auto company. In order to compete successfully for an industrial giant like GM, taking a page out of its competitor’s game book is the only way to go.
